Lowak Shoppala' (Fire and Light) is an ongoing project initiated by the Chickasaw Nation and is based on their original migration story. Thousands of years ago, the khota falaya, or "leaning pole," led both Choctaws and Chickasaws to their historic homeland in the Southeastern United States. In the spirit of the old and wise leaning pole, the Chickasaw Nation seeks to advance projects that reflect the ability to move and adapt with the tides of the contemporary world. It is a concept that blends both traditional values and contemporary ideas to form a picture of the thriving tribal identity.
The new piece will celebrate the opening of the new cultural center of the Chickasaw Nation in Sulphur, Oklahoma in 2009. The composer will weave together the Chickasaw Children's Chorus, the Chickasaw Nation Dance Troupe, local Chickasaw storytellers, and the Oklahoma Youth Orchestra into a musical and theatrical presentation.
