The career of San Francisco composer Alexis Alrich has moving along swimmingly since she was commissioned in 1997 to compose a piece for narrator and orchestra based on the book "Island of the Blue Dolphins" by Scott O'Dell.

Alrich is a familiar face among women musicians. The Women's Philharmonic premiered her first orchestral piece, "Avenues," in 1991. Since then, her chamber compositions have been performed at the Boston Women's Music Festival, the International Congress on Women in Music in Atlanta, and throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.

Alrich earned her undergraduate degree from the California Institute of the Arts, a master's from Mills College, and studied at the New England Conservatory of Music. Her music has been recorded by Opus One Records.

Farmington and Jay, ME
In the towns of Farmington and Wilton, Maine, a school-based string program initiated in 1982 has provided thousands of students with the opportunity to learn classical music as participating performers. In nearby Jay and Livermore, folk music and traditional fiddling have been enjoyed by area residents for generations. By bringing together and celebrating these two distinct musical cultures, composer Alexis Alrich was able to forge new links among the people of the county.
